Penning this as the train leaves Cambridge station, a place where I often find myself reflecting on life as we glide towards London. Surprisingly, the train is busy for a Monday morning.
I joined the Darkroom Socials in March, a photography club founded by Didi, because I wanted to connect with photographers like myself. It was around the time I was also getting more comfortable heading out with my camera, approaching people, and learning how to make the most of any situation in terms of lighting and composition.
What a journey it’s been since! Every third week, we’d turn up to review assignments from the previous meet-up and receive and give constructive feedback about each other’s submissions. And oh, Didi—she never misses a chance to crop things up. Pardon my language, but that’s all part of the growth.
I’d say the progress didn’t happen overnight, but it certainly left its mark.
Leaving its marks.
All assignments submission requires printing your work, this process really improves your composition—you start honing in on what truly belongs in the frame.
No small growth, I reckon. None.
And today, I’m on this train to London for something special—our first group exhibition at the Photobook Cafe, titled “Introducing Darkroom Socials.” The work I’m exhibiting? It’s one of the assignments I was given, proof of how far I’ve come since picking up a camera.
Barely a year ago, I had no idea how to handle a camera. Today, I’m exhibiting my work titled “Nothing's Wasted” alongside the amazing folks I’ve been learning with and from.
You can view the project here: “Nothing's Wasted”, and on also on Youtube.
